Liz & Zach
Industrial design is so hot right now, but as a wedding venue? Yes, indeed! Liz and Zach’s extraordinary industrial-themed wedding really stepped outside the box of tradition. It was an event we just had to share! Liz, from Connecticut, and Zach, from Pennsylvania, met in college at Boston University, where they had the same work study job. What they didn’t know was a lifetime and love was soon to follow. This lovely couple was gracious enough to share some awesome details and fantastic photos of their unique wedding.

The proposal
“So, the story of how he proposed is a little embarrassing… for me,” Liz says. “We had been talking about getting a dog for a while, so he suggested that we go to the SPCA and take a look. On the drive home, he took a really strange, long route—driving first by the place at Boston University where we met, then the first apartment we shared together. He was narrating the ride, and of course, I still didn’t get it. We got out of the car and walked back into the house that we had bought together a few months back. We’re standing in the living room, and he asked, ‘Do you realize what we just did?’ I said, ‘We looked at dogs?’ Zach replied with, ‘Well, actually, I just took us on a tour of our whole relationship—then he proposed.”

The venue and theme
Liz and Zach broke the rules of traditional weddings and went with something that truly felt like them as a couple and as individuals. Liz says, “I’m a writer, and Zach’s a history teacher, so a venue that had a story behind it was important to us. We didn’t just want a rectangular ballroom or something that was created to be a wedding venue. The Waterworks Museum in Boston was the first and only venue we looked at. We booked it on the spot and tailored the rest of our wedding around it.”
“For example, we knew fresh flowers would look odd against such a large, industrial space, so we went with flowers made out of book pages for the centerpieces, pairing them with stacks of century-old hardcover books and table numbers made to look like library check-out cards. Also, instead of a traditional guest book, we bought postcards with old advertisements on them and had guests drop them into a 1940s suitcase. If I were to try to give our wedding a style name, it would probably be Industrial Old Hollywood.”

The dress
Liz chose a wedding gown by one our favorite designers here at VOWS–Alvina Valenta. Liz says, “Frankly when I walked into VOWS, I didn’t know what I was doing. I also didn’t really know what I was looking for in a dress. I had vague ideas, but everything I picked for myself and tried on was not cutting it. My consultant, Sara, finally said, ‘Can I pick out something for you?’ And she came back with my dress.”
How did Liz know she had found her gown? She goes on to say, “I knew I loved the Alvina dress. I loved the keyhole back and the dramatic buttons running down the length of the train. I also loved that the dress wasn’t stark white but rather a kind of off-white. I went to another dress shop after just to make sure. I found dresses that were similar in style, but frankly, the quality was not even close to the dress I found at VOWS.”
